On the hunt for a new car to take the family wherever they need to go? An electric vehicle could be the way to go. These cars were once a thing of the future but they’re now very much a part of modern life and we’re seeing more of them on the roads every day. That’s because they have vastly improved in recent years and with everyone trying to do their bit in supporting the UK government’s bid to become carbon neutral by 2050, an EV could help do just that.

EVs are without a doubt one of the best options for a car for most drivers on the road, but what about families? Can these cars support the many needs of lugging children around to school, parks or even a family road trip?

We have all of the answers in our guide below. Read on to find out if EVs are a good option for families wanting to buy a new car.

Pros and cons of buying electric vehicles

As with most cars on the road, they’re not without fault. However, there are also plenty of benefits to owning an EV too. Here are the pros and cons of buying an EV:

Pros:

  • Zero emissions
  • Government incentives when buying them
  • Save on fuel
  • Cheaper maintenance due to fewer parts involved
  • Almost no noise when driving
  • Instant power for great acceleration

Cons:

  • Often a shorter range compared to traditional cars
  • Lack of charging points (although the government are looking to install more)
  • Slow charging time
  • High purchase price when new
  • Cornering can feel heavy at times due to the weight of the batteries in the car

So, are electric vehicles good family cars?

Electric vehicles are more than capable of handling a family. The low emissions mean your family’s carbon footprint is reduced and a lack of noise will make them perfect for keeping children relaxed throughout the entire journey.

What’s more, reduced maintenance worries will mean surprise visits to the garage are kept to a minimum, so you’re less likely to be left without a vehicle to take your family to wherever they need to get to.

We know family life can be expensive, however, so affording one may be the only challenge. When you save up for one, though, it will feel all the more special. Plus, saving is a great way to boost your credit score too!
